Did you know that more than 90% of the searches that are made online are conducted through the use of Google's Search function. 


It safe to say that if you've got the net, you're familiar with Google.


People search the internet for just about everything, and when they do, they do it with the intention of finding what they need - fast. Whether it's for a restaurant in the vicinity or a plumber for their broken pipes, Google provides the links to and information about what ever it is they seek.


But what happens if you're a business owner and you're objective is to be a top listing for the queries your ideal customers are searching? 


Well, once you launch your website, you need to add content to it. But not just any kind of content. You need to add valuable content for your potential customers, and enveloped into the body of that content you need to have relevant, powerful keywords.


Most people freeze when they hear that word - or - they panic and start drowning their site content in a painful phrase hoping that strategy will work. 


It doesn't.

Keywords are words or groups of words that we use to search for content online.


They can be single words, like "florist", or "plumbing", or they can be short phrases, such as "fast-food Berlin", or "phone repair London". That's how you, me, and most internet users search for the content they're interested in.


But what does this mean for your business?

Google's search engine uses a complicated algorithm to rank pages when it displays search results. Keywords are one of the most important parts of this algorithm. This means that in order to rank as high as possible on the search results, you must have keywords on the pages of your website. Before you start adding content and keywords to your website, first you have to do a proper research and planning.


There are two main things you need to understand when trying to choose the right keywords for your website: traffic and competition. 

  • Traffic refers to the number of searches that contain a specific keyword in a given day. A keyword with a high amount of traffic could translate into a lot of page views. 
  • Competition refers to the number of websites that are trying to rank as high as possible in the search results. The higher the competition, the less likely you are to succeed in attracting customers with that specific keyword.

Knowing details about the traffic and competition for the keywords you intend to use is extremely helpful.


Because, after you've done your research and selected the keywords that are most relevant for your business, it's time to use them. 


Most people who are new to the online business make a very common mistake: they overuse keywords... Don't.


Excessive usage of the same keyword will bring your page down in search results. Plus with Google's ever evolving algorithm updates, it's important to use synonyms or variations of your keyword or phrase. The algorithm is smart and can understand what your content has to offer readers. 


And the bottom line is that if your content doesn't offer a lot (except a boat load of repetitive terms), it doesn't really matter how many times you say "South Hampton Plumbers", you won't maintain a powerful top listed postition.


In today's digital market it's close to impossible to compete for single-word keywords. That's mostly because most business giants have invested a lot of time, money, and effort into perfecting their reach to the public.


So if you're a medium to small business... or hell even if you're a mega conglomerate but are competing for mega popular terms, you (or your SEO team) needs to identify phrases that match your business and your clients' searches.
